Iowa College Aid announces new college access grants
Awards now total more $800,000 in 11 Iowa communities
Iowa College Aid has announced the awarding of the next round of Local College Access Network grants, including three new Implementation Grants. The agency has awarded $806,708 to create 11 Local College Access Networks, or LCANs, around the state.
The goal of an LCAN is to increase college access, enrollment and completion using a framework known as “Collective Impact”: Iowa College Aid provides grant money, training, technical assistance and professional development. Each LCAN assesses the assets and needs of its community and works to fill the gaps in partnership with local colleges, school districts, area education agencies, business groups, elected officials, employers and community and religious organizations.
To date, the following grants have been awarded:
Planning Grants of up to $20,000:
- Quad Cities
- Cedar Rapids
Launch Grants of up to $60,000 (plus Planning Grants):
- Sioux City
- Bremer County
Implementation Grants of up to $40,000 (plus Planning Grants and Launch Grants):
- Mason City
“LCANs make a change in the way a community interacts and communicates,” said Anne Boyer, project coordinator of Mason City – CAN. “This Collective Impact Model ensures activities are streamlined, unduplicated and better communicated. Starting an LCAN can open the eyes of all community leaders to the importance of education, the many forms education/certification can take and the collective role the entire community must devote to achieve real change.”
LCANs create awareness and opportunities for low-income and minority students, as well as unemployed or underemployed adults. “With Iowa’s ambitious goal to create a workforce that is 70 percent college-educated, these efforts are crucial,” said Karen Misjak, executive director of Iowa College Aid. “LCANs give local leaders the support they need to raise college attainment rates in their communities.”
