The Iowa Registered Nurse and Nurse Educator Loan Forgiveness Program offers loan repayment assistance to registered nurses employed in Iowa and nurse educators teaching at eligible Iowa colleges and universities. A record total of 327 individuals applied for funding during the 2015-16 application cycle. Iowa College Aid recently designated 40 recipients for an average loan repayment award of $2,340 (based on full-time employment).
Recipients may receive forgiveness for five consecutive years and must reapply annually by completing the Iowa Financial Aid Application
Nearly 900 college students will head off to college this fall with fuller pockets. Iowa College Aid awarded 889 deserving students with the All Iowa Opportunity Scholarship (AIOS) with amounts of up $8,118 per student, depending on factors such as academic success, enrollment level and the family's financial need according to the FAFSA. Iowa began the AIOS in 2007 with the intent of identifying students who might feel that college is financially out of their reach and has assisted over 3,500 attend colleges or universities in Iowa since its inception.
GEAR UP Iowa hosted a Student Summit June 11-15 involving college student mentors working with nearly 50 rising 9th grade students from the following GUI partner districts: Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Ottumwa, Perry, Sioux City and Storm Lake. The students gained new friendships and experience living in a residence hall at Grand View University, and had the opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn about college and explore potential career interests. Some of the GEAR UP Iowa Student Summit highlights include:
- Guest speakers: Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission Director Joshua Barr, Liz Nead, Facebook Data Center, IowaWORKS of Central Iowa and Grand View University Admissions
- Leadership Workshop with Alan Feirer
- Performance and workshop with Movement 515/RunDSM
- Career interest inventory
- Business site visits to UnityPoint Health and Accumold, Inc.
- Creating a “Mural of Dreams” to be displayed in the Iowa College Aid office
Students left empowered and excited to apply what they learned as student leaders back in their high schools and communities, as well as promote higher education through GEAR UP Iowa activities. Pictures from the event can be seen on the GEAR UP Iowa social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).
