Marlu Abarca, an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer working with Iowa College Aid, has been appointed to the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs, the Iowa Department of Human Rights has announced.

Abarca is one of seven commission members who serve four-year terms studying the opportunities for and changing needs of Latinos in the state and serving as a liaison between the office and the public, sharing information and gathering constituency input.

The commission is responsible for advising the governor, the lieutenant governor and the Legislature on issues facing Iowans of Latino heritage in public policy areas, including education, language access, civic engagement and access to government services.

Abarca has worked with Iowa College Aid's College Changes Everything initiative on issues surrounding first-generation students and increasing access to postsecondary education for students across the state.
