Study Tips

How to study effectively:
  • Be prepared. Before you go to class, be sure you have done the assigned reading and any other assignments. You will learn more during class if you have already read the material.
  • Be organized. Keep track of your scheduled tests, reading and writing assignments, and other homework in your student planner. Figure out what you need to do first and when you are going to do it.
  • Be on time. Show up to class on time so that you can get a good seat. Pick a spot where you won’t be tempted to talk to that cute classmate or look out the window! Focus on the subject matter.
  • Be aware. Know yourself and what you need to be successful when you study. Figure out the best time and place for you to stuyd. Take breaks when needed to help keep you focused.
  • Be proactive. If you have questions or are having trouble with the work, ask for help. You could visit with the professor during office hours, join a study group, or get a tutor.
  • Don’t skip class. You will miss valuable notes and other material that will probably be covered on the test if you don’t show up for class. Sure, you can get the notes from a classmate…but how can you be sure they are good notes?
  • Don’t procrastinate. If you save everything until the last minute, it will be really hard - not to mention stressful - to keep up with your work. Pulling all-nighters is NOT the best way to study!
  • Don’t stress-out. Try to avoid stress by keeping your life in good balance. You may have a lot going on – friends, work, class, homework, and extracurricular activities. If you use good time management, you should be able to fit it all in.
  • Don’t sacrifice your health. Your schedule may be crazy but it's still important to take care of yourself. Try to get enough sleep (take a nap if needed), eat healthy meals (pizza is not a vegetable), and exercise (playing Playstation is NOT exercise).
