here to learn what Courtney, a high school student, is doing to prepare for her dream college. Each college may be a little different, but try the following:
Do Get Good Grades
The grades you get in high school do matter. Keep your grades up and you'll have a better chance of getting accepted to the college you want. A high GPA might also get you free money for college through a scholarship.
Don't Take the Easy Route
Signing up for all the easy classes won't impress anyone. It's better to get decent grades in hard classes than great grades in easy classes. Besides, if you take hard classes you'll have to learn how to study. That way when you get to college you will be ready.
Do Take Tests
You'll probably have to take a test like the
ACT or
SAT as part of the college admission process. Don't stay out until 2 A.M. the night before the test! If you get a good score, it might help you get into college or get a scholarship.
Don't Assume Colleges Will Come Knocking
Getting into college won't happen by accident. It will take hard work on your part to get where you want to be. Know what you need to do and do it!
Do Take the Right Classes
Figure out which high school classes are required for admission to your college. These requirements can vary, so check with the college or your high school counselor. [
see sample requirements] Also, be sure to take classes which will prepare you for your selected college major.
Don't Get "Senioritis"
You have worked hard and you finally got that acceptance letter. Now you can breathe easy, right? Wrong! Don't let your grades slip during your senior year or the college might take back your admission offer.
Do Get Involved
Get involved outside of the classroom too. Extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or church and community involvement will look good on your application.
Don't Post Just Anything Online
Keep in mind that what you post on your MySpace and Facebook page is not private. College admission counselors and your roommate-to-be may look you up online. Don't post anything you wouldn't want your mom - or the college admission counselor - to see!
TIP: Good study habits can make or break your freshman year in college. Be sure that you practice (or learn) good habits while you're in high school so that when you get to college you will be prepared. Click
