Saving for College
College can definitely be expensive. It is smart to start planning to pay for your college education as early as possible. It isn't just your parent's responsibility. It is your education, so take part in figuring out how you will pay for it.
Start Saving
There will be tons of things you will want to buy for your dorm room before you go off to college. Start putting aside money now. Once you get to college, you will be happy you did! Check out the
College Savings Calculator to help you decide how much you need to save each month to reach your educational savings goals.
Save Tuition Expenses
You can make college less expensive by taking classes at a local community college while you are in high school. You can earn college credits now that you won't have to pay for later. You can also earn college credits by taking
Advanced Placement (AP) classes or
CLEP exams. Check with your high school counselor for information about the options at your high school.
Be a Good Student
Earn good grades and score well on your ACT (or other entrance exam) so you have a better chance of winning scholarships.
Make the College Want You
If you are a student the college really wants, they may offer you scholarship or grants if you attend the college. Get involved in extra-curricular activities, your church, or your community. You should also take advantage of leadership opportunities and do volunteer work or community service. Be a good citizen as well as a good student.
