Work-Study & Part-Time Employment
You may decide to pay for some of your college expenses by taking a part-time job. The extra income means having to borrow less in student loans. Part-time jobs can include work-study and jobs on and off campus.
Work-Study
To qualify for a work-study job you must have financial need. If you are eligible, your college or university will include work-study in your financial aid award letter. Students who work on campus may work for their school, a private nonprofit organization or a public agency. Check with your college for work-study opportunities.
Part-Time Employment
If you aren't eligible for work-study, you can still work part-time to help with your college expenses. You can find jobs on or off campus through the local or campus newspaper or your college's website.
When looking for a part-time job, keep in mind the following:
- Working part-time teaches financial responsibility and self-discipline. Just remember why are you in college – to complete your education.
- Don't over do it. Part-time employment shouldn't affect your grades if you work 20 hours or less each week.
