Applying to College
Applying to college will be less stressful if you are prepared. Follow these helpful guidelines:
Make an appointment
Plan to meet with an admission representative at the college you would like to attend. Identify yourself as an adult learner and ask about campus resources or unique programs that may help you succeed.
Know what to expect
Research the admission requirements for the college you're interested in attending. Some colleges may have an alternative admissions program for students over the age of 25 and may not require high school transcripts or ACT/SAT scores. Find out the requirements in advance so you won't be surprised. You may be asked to take a standardized placement test such as
ASSET or
COMPASS. Don't be afraid! The tests are not obstacles but tools to place you in the correct courses to help you achieve your career goals.
Know the deadline
Each college will have different admission applications and deadlines. Start preparing your application early so that you aren't rushed. You should find out if the admission application serves as the application for available scholarships as well.
Be complete
Make sure you complete the application in a clear and concise manner. Read and follow all directions carefully and have someone proofread your application materials.
Apply online
Some colleges may offer online admission applications and waive the application fee if you apply online. Know your options.
Explore your options
If you have previously attended college, your credits may transfer to your new college or program. Some colleges also may offer an
Adult Basic Education (ABE) program to help provide basic skills in the areas of reading, writing and math. You may find it helpful to brush up on skills you haven't used for awhile!
