Take Inventory
Attending college can be a life-changing event. You will find that your decision may impact many aspects of your life. Consider the following:
Begin With the End in Mind
You should have a definite goal in mind before you decide to enroll in college. What would you like to achieve? Think about what type of degree you would like to seek and what type of career you would like in the end.
Take a Step Back
There are many things in your life that may need to be arranged - or rearranged - for you to be able to attend college. Think about the following factors:
- Employment - If you work full-time, will you be able to balance work, family, and your classes? Will your current employer be flexible and "school-friendly?" Can you afford to quit your job or work part-time? Getting your college degree will be worth it in the long-term. You will most likely have increased earning power; however it may require sacrifices in the short-term. With financial aid and careful budgeting, achieving your goal can become a reality.
- Family - Is your family willing to support you in your goal? If you have a spouse and children, going to college will impact the entire family. You may not be available to your family during certain times so it will be important for you to find solutions that work for everyone. If you manage your time, it can work. Don't let family commitments become your excuse to not pursue an education. Instead, make your family a reason to improve your earning power.
- External Resources - If a change in your employment is needed, how will this affect your current situation? Will you lose your health insurance? Do you have adequate child care? Will you need additional child care to allow for extra study time? The college you attend may have solutions to your health care and child care needs, so don't be afraid to ask. You also may qualify for other low cost health care or child care options.
