Postsecondary Registration

Institutions not currently doing business in Iowa are required to register with the Iowa Secretary of State. (Some exceptions apply as defined in Chapter 261b of the Iowa Code.)  To become registered, a school must first be approved for operation by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission and/or the Iowa Board of Education.

Postsecondary Registration Process [See a flow chart for more information on the process]
  1. Applicants obtain a form from the Secretary of State website.
  2. Applicants submit the application along with the appropriate payment and supporting documents.
  3. The application is forwarded to the Iowa College Student Aid Commission or the Iowa Department of Education.
  4. The application is reviewed by the appropriate agency.
  5. The institution is notified of the decision.

Advisory Committee on Postsecondary Registration
The advisory committee advises the Commission on issues relating to the registration of postsecondary schools, colleges and universities that have applied to do business in Iowa. The Committee operates under Iowa Code Sections 261.2(7), and 261B. The advisory committee meets on an as-needed basis. [Meeting Information]
