2008 Higher Education Research Conference

The Iowa College Student Aid Commission is pleased to sponsor the 2008 Higher Education Research Conference in Des Moines, Iowa on October 23, 2008.

Who should attend?
The conference is for college and university presidents, financial aid administrators, institutional researchers, elected officials, policy-makers, and other Iowa higher education officials.

The 2008 conference will feature four nationally known experts on the issues and trends affecting colleges and universities.

Speakers

 

Dr. Holly Zanville

Dr. Holly Zanville is Senior Research Director at the Lumina Foundation for Education. Her 30-year career spans the education pipeline, with service in K-12, community colleges, four-year colleges/universities, higher education executive offices, and state-level PK-20 initiatives. Most recently she served as State Coordinator of Oregon PK-20 Redesign, a Joint Board of Education-Gates Foundation Initiative; Senior Academic Officer of the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board; and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the Oregon University System. Zanville received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Minnesota; M.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and B.A. in English and Biology from Lindenwood University.

   
Dr. Michelle Asha Cooper Dr. Michelle Asha Cooper is the incoming President (effective September 2008) of the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), an independent, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to access and success in postsecondary education. Based in Washington, D.C., IHEP uses unique research and innovative programs to inform key decision makers who shape public policy and support economic and social development. Prior to joining IHEP, Michelle was the Deputy Director of the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance, US Department of Education. She has also worked at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Council for Independent Colleges (CIC), and King's College. She is a past recipient of the National Education Association's Excellence in the Academy New Scholar Award. Michelle received her bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston, a master's degree from Cornell University, and a doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park.
   
Dr. Wanda E. Everage Dr. Wanda E. Everage is the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Academic Excellence at Drake University. She is a former middle school teacher, central office administrator, and high school vice principal in the Des Moines Public Schools and has served as one of five members on the Iowa Board of Parole. Wanda received her BA Degree from Drake University in Sociology, her Master's Degree from Iowa State University in Educational Administration, and her Ph.D. in Higher Education at Iowa State University. As a human relations, conflict management, and diversity facilitator, she has made presentations to administrators, faculty, students, staff, parents, and corporate personnel on topics that have included, but are not limited to: effective communication, motivation, living and working in a diverse society, leadership training, and goal-setting and decision-making with a focus on intellectual and personal development. Wanda is a 2007 recipient of the Virgil S. Lagomarcino Laureate Award, Iowa State University, honoring graduates who are nationally and internationally recognized for their meritorious service or distinguished achievement in the field of education. She is the first recipient of the Madelyn L. Levitt Mentor of the Year Award, which represents commitment to student success at Drake University and honors a faculty or staff member for excellence in advising and mentoring of students. Among her many other awards, she also received the Donald V. Adams Spirit of Drake Award, the Young Womens Resource Center Woman of Vision Award, and the YMCA Women of Achievement Award.
   
Dr. Sandy Baum Dr. Sandy Baum is Professor of Economics at Skidmore College and Senior Policy Analyst at the College Board. She is the co-author of Trends in Student Aid, Trends in College Pricing, and Education Pays: The Benefits of Higher Education for Individuals and Society for the College Board. Other recent work includes studies of setting benchmarks for manageable student debt levels and of tuition discounting in public and private colleges and universities. Dr. Baum is co-chair of the Rethinking Student Aid study group, a foundation-funded effort under the auspices of the College Board to develop long-term proposals for reforming the student aid system.
   
Demaree K. Michelau Demaree K. Michelau is the Director of Policy Analysis at the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). WICHE is responsible for the publication of "Knocking at the College Door" The author of numerous education reports, policy briefs, and magazine articles, she has experience in higher education policy on issues such as accelerated learning options, adult learners, college affordability and access, K-16 reform, and postsecondary remedial education. Previously, she worked for the National Conference of State Legislatures as a policy specialist.
