After Graduation - Now What?

Preparing for college graduation and starting what is probably their first professional job is both exciting and a little scary for students. Life after college means more responsibility and making important financial decisions.

Target Audience:
College seniors and gradate students

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of purchasing a car and selecting the appropriate insurance, employee benefits, retirement plans and health insurance options, mortgages versus lease agreements, house/rental insurance, student loan repayment plans, credit cards and FICO scores and much more.

Avoiding Identity Theft

In today's society, students are oftent taught ways to protect their home, car and other personal items. They may even have learned basic self-defence so they can feel safe while walking through campus and the community. However, many students may not have learned how to protect the most important thing they have - their identity.

Traditional college students and adult learners

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of identity theft, how to detect warning signs, ways to deter an attack and what to do if they become victims.


Basics of Money Management

This presentation provides a brief overview of several areas of money management. Students will learn tools for understanding credit and its impact on their personal and financial success. More detailed presentations are also available for these individual topics.

High school seniors and college students

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of developing a budget, understanding credit reports and credit scores, evaluating and selecting a credit card and ways to avoid identity theft.



Dress for Success


Students may feel it is superficial to worry about their wardrobe, but what one wears speaks volumes. Students should ask themselves what message they want their clothes to send in school, an interview or the workplace.

Target Audience: Middle school students, high school students and traditional college students

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of appropriate dress for job interviews,
as well as appropriate dress for a first professional job.



Financial Aid 101

Planning, preparing and paying for college are key steps for a successful college career. But it is often difficult to know where to start. This presentation provides information, tools and resources to families and students exploring higher education opportunities. Topics covered include the FAFSA process and the different types of financial aid.

High school juniors and seniors and their parents

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of how to start the financial aid process, when to start, and tools and resources available.


How to Manage Money So It Doesn't Manage You

Successful money management is possible at any age.  This presentation will provide attendees with the tools they need to set realistic goals and to create a usable spending plan.

Middle school students, high school students, traditional college students and adult learners

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of creating and maintaining a workable budget/spending plan, and the importance of setting financial goals.


How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck

Living from paycheck to paycheck can be an exhausting and risky way of handling household expenses. Thorugh this presentation, attendees will learn how to change their spending habits and increase their financial stability.

This presentation will show attendees that now is the perfect time to create a budget and start out on the right foot.

I.O.U: How to Make Wise Borrowing Decisions

There are times when borrowing is necessary. Using debt appropriately allows individuals to aquire an asset they couldn't afford to buy outright. This session will review different lending sources and what to look for when borrowing, so attendees understand the true cost of debt from each source.

Living Comfortably on a College Budget (a.k.a. How to Prevent Living in Your Parents’ Basement After College)

A key component to financial success is the implementation ofa budget. This presenation will help attendees establish a budget, track expenses and avoid situations that could lead to financial disaster. In addition, attendees will learn the top money mistakes college students make and receive tips on how to survive on a typical college student's budget. The presenation will also touch on making good financial decisions after graudation to help build future wealth.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of developing a budget, ways to prevent impulse spending, advantages and disadvantages of credit and debit card usage, advantages and disadvantages of prepaid credit cards, differentiating between wants versus needs and changing current behaviors.

Life is filled with choices; some more difficult than others. This presentation will help address some key financial decisions and teach attendees how to make the best decisions in order to ensure a more secure financial future.

Nursing Loan Forgiveness Program

Student loan repayment assistance is available for borrowers who work in specified fields and geographical areas. Registered nurses in Iowa may be eligible for loan forgiveness programs from both state and federal sources. During this presenation, attendees will learn about federal and state loan forgiveness programs for nurses, including eligibility requirements, service obligations and how to apply.

This presentation will provide timelines, estimated moving costs, “to do” lists, buyer and renter’s information, packing tips and more. This program is perfect for anyone who is setting up their first home or as a refresher for the seasoned movers.

Start Smart – Habits of Responsible Credit Card Users

It is important for students to use credit wisely, right from the start.  This presentation will help attendees evaluate credit card options, understand the terms associated with credit cards and learn how to use credit cards wisely.

Student Loans - What Every High School Student Should Know

Federal student loans can be a great way to cover education and living expenses while in college. However, all loans are real money that must be repaid...with interest! This presentation is designed to help students understand the responsibilities associated with borrowing student loans and how the borrowing decisions they make while in college will directly affect their financial future. The presentation will also include an overview of the Stafford Loan process.

Study Abroad – What to Know Before You Go

For parents of students interested in study-abroad options, it can be hard to adjust to the idea of their child being so far from home. In addition, there are a lot of other factors to consider when considering study abroad opportunities. This presentation provides parents with helpful information about study abroad and off-campus programs. Parents will learn what questions they should be asking and who they can turn to for answers. Information provided includes: documents needed, financial aid options, immunizations and what to expect when their student returns.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of things they need to consider when their child plans to study abroad, as well as the resources available to help make informed decisions.


Tackling Debt

Some debt is necessary to achieve goals and dreams, such as borrowing to pay for a college education. Other debt, like high interest credit card debt, can drain finances and actually hinder achievement of important goals and dreams. Through this program, attendees will learn how to balance their borrowing habits to reduce debt and improve their financial health.

Teachers in Iowa may be eligible for loan forgiveness programs from both state and federal sources. During this presenation, attendees will learn about federal and state loan forgiveness programs for teachers, including eligibility requirements, service obligations and how to apply. Attendees will also learn how to apply for forbearance so maximum benefits can be received.

Understanding Your Credit History – Part 1

Viewing and understanding their credit report is an important step for students as they transition to adult life with new financial decisions and responsibilities. This presentation will help attendees how to access their credit report, discuss the credit reporting process and discuss what their credit report says to a prospective lender. The presentation will also touch on different types of inquiries and their impat on credit scores.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of the importance of a credit history, the function of credit reporting agencies, how to request a credit report and understand what it says.


Understanding Your Credit History – Part 2

Their credit score may be one of the most important numbers in a person's life. In this presentation, attendees will learn how a credit score is calculated and how to improve their score so they can get the best loan terms and interest rates. Attendees will also learn about laws aimed at protecting their credit information from identity theft.

What Do You Want to Be (a.k.a. It’s How Much?)

An excellent complement to a career planning unit, this presentation will allow attendees to explore career options, learn the average salaries for different professions and the cost of living for different geographic locations.  The cost of living and average salaries in Iowa will be highlighted. The presentation will also offer tips for assessing skills and interests to find each student’s ideal career.

Target Audience: Middle school, high school and early college students

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of salary information and how to assess their skills and interests and relate those characteristics to possible careers.


What’s In the Fine Print – What to Know Before You Sign a Contract

A contract is a legally binding agreement, so it is important to know what is included, especially the fine print. This presentation will discuss the key points of cell phone contracts, student loan promissory notes, rental leases, auto service contracts and credit card agreements so attendees can be informed and prepared when asked to sign on the line.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of cell phone plans and contracts, promissory notes, leases and rental agreements, renters' legal rights, auto service contracts and credit card agreements.


How to Avoid a Job You Hate, (a.k.a. How to Find a Career You Love)

Selecting a career path is an important decision. This presentation will discuss values, interests and abilities and how those things can be used to select a fulfilling career. The presentation will adddress the difference between a job and career, define the term "career path", list the key skills employers seek, compare the pros and cons of several careers, and identify the statistically most dangerous and the most satisfying careers.

Target Audience:
High school students and college students in their first two years

Learning Objectives: Attendees will identify their most important values and interests and learn the skills needed to be most appealing to employers.


College is Coming – What do You Need to Know?

This in-depth presentation covers information important to families of students nearing college age. Statistics are given concerning the cost of education at different types of institutions and regarding the difference in lifetime earnings based on the degree obtained. Tips for saving for college are discussed, along with information on locating scholarships. Investment options, such as 529 plans, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts, UGMA and UTMA and Roth IRAs are also covered.

Junior high and high school students and their families

Learning Objectives: Attendees will have a better understanding of college costs, the benefits of a college education, college savings options, types of financial aid available and scholarship opportunities.
